Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

In our technology-filled lives, this is a common condition. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs due to compression of the median nerve that runs through the carpal tunnel at the wrist. This may be caused by repetitive wrist and hand motions such as typing. Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome begin with tingling and then worsening pain felt in the fingers. As time goes on these symptoms can worsen leading to muscle weakness if not treated with the release of the compressed nerve through a small incision on the palm of the hand. This procedure is performed as an outpatient and can be performed under local anesthetic.

Trigger Finger aka Tenosynovitis

Trigger finger occurs when inflammation of the tendon sheath or tendon pathology prevents gliding of the tendon in its pulleys. The result is stiffness and pain as well as a “stuck” finger which may not open completely or locks intermittently in a flexed position. Therapy, splinting and steroid injections may help this condition. Refractory cases benefit from surgery. The surgery is usually performed through a small 1-centimeter incision on the palm surface of the hand.

Ganglion

Sometimes referred to as a bible cyst, Ganglion cysts present as a painful mass on either the top or bottom of the wrist. It is the most common type of benign tumor that affects the hand. Luckily, it can be removed with surgery.
